In this work is has been shown the applicability of a procedure to drastically reduce the stress concentration in notches with non circular shapes; the basic idea is to make use of functionally graded materials whose elastic modulus distribution is defined according to a simple optimisation procedure. The presented numerical approach can easily be extended also to other notch shapes.
